Wellbutrin

Hi Everyone,

I ve seen a lot of people here take wellbutrin and Ive never heard of it in england, I don't know if it has a different name.  I was wondering what type of antidepressant it is and how it helps people.  I currently take lexapro and Ive seen that some people take wellbutrin along side this.
I was just curious as Ive never heard of this drug in the UK.

Thanks,
Victoria

Wellbutrin AKA Buproprion is a commonly prescribed antidepressant which works by modifying neurotransmitters in the brain - specifically lowers the chemical dopamine in the brain. A pretty good medication with relatively few sexual side-effects (unlike Prozac and Paxil) - is also used to help quit smoking. Side effects include insomnia, jitteriness and rarely seizures. Needless to say, I am not a doctor and your doctor would be the best person to give you more detailed advice regarding this subject.
Wellbutrin is an SSRI, it's action it to inhibit reuptake of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine.  It also goes by the name of Zyban including the name that Susan gave Bupropin.  It is widely used here in the US...I cant find any info re: England.

Wellburtin is not an SSRI. "Bupropion is a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of neuroephinephrine and dopamine, and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or the re-uptake of serotonin." (Complete Prescribing Information for Wellbutrin)

From a bit of googling, I think I ofund some info for you on Bupropion in the UK. http://www.nyrdtc.nhs.uk/docs/nde/bupropion_SR.pdf

It is mainly used for smoking cessation in the UK, but I'm sure if you talk to your doctor he/she can discss it as a possibility. It's been a god send for me...all ther other meds either made me sick, numb, or caused sexual side effects.

Hi stlouiemeg, welcome to the depression forum, we are happy to have you.  I will agree to disagree with you on the fact of Wellbutrin being an SSRI and am posting a link explaining this.  Wellbutrin wasnt considered an SSRI for a long time as it did have "weak reuptake effects" however recently it has been added to the list.  Thank you for finding the UK link, I am sure it will be helpful for Victoria.  Take care and I hope you visit us often
