Does anyone else find that mornings are the worst time with UC. Usually the rest of the day is great. I usually have to get up a good three hours before I go anywhere just in case. some days are better than others. Its not like I am eating this huge meal the night before... Just was wondering if anyone else finds this happens as well..
Nancy
Yes, even when I was in remission I would get up and use the bathroom every morning like clockwork. At that time, I would go just once and it was formed but it was still strange to always go right after waking up, almost every day for a year. Now that i am not as well controlled, I get up in the morning and have to go a few times but I am usually okay throughout the day/evening. Last night I ate a huge meal and I did pay for it a little this AM.

March 2007: Diagnosed with mild proctitis - Treated with Canasa (as needed)
August 08 - December 08: Relapse & Anemic - Treated with Asacol (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day
January 09 - December 09: Remission!! Canasa nightly + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
December 09 - January 10: Flare :( - 40mg prednisone + Canasa - Relapse @ 2.5mg - Began Slower Taper
Current: prednisone, Colazal, Canasa
Mornings kill me. Sometimes I go 4 or 5 times before leaving for work then I do not go the rest of the day. When I first wake up I never go far from the bathroom because the first BM is coming soon. I think this is common with UC.

Diagnosed with UC in 2005
Colazol 4 x 3 daily
2005 to 2009 condition manageable with minor flare-ups
2010 to May 2010 - more severe flare-up
May 2010 started Mesalamine Rectal Suspension Enema
Always. The pressure in my rectum is the worse. It always feels like I have to "go" even when I don't. Very uncomfortable.
Ulcerative Proctitis since Sept of 1998. Hospitalized for eight days. Prednisone, Asacol, Rowasa enemas. Two year remission. Flare..switched from Asacol to Colazal. Two year remission. Started 6MP in 2002. Flared yearly from 2003 to May of 08. Hospitalized for ten days in May of 08. Flaring more often since. Off 6MP. Remicade failed. Now on Humira, Colazal, 10 mgm of prednisone, Calcium with D, cort enemas and suppositories, Canasa. Doesn't seem like Humira is working. On prednisone 16 months out of the last 24 months...waaay too much! Surgical consult on May 11th. Sick of being sick. Stopped Humira, awaiting a date to schedule a permanent ileostomy!
Maybe it's because we are sleeping and inactive for a while and then we move around, stirring everything up.
I am always scared about what will happen after I eat breakfast.
Ulcerative Colitis since 2001.

I didn't ask him why.

I think I'm one of the few on here who doesn't have tough mornings. I'll occasionally have a morning BM, but mine typically come after dinner, which was my normal in pre-UC days.

You're probably right, Krissy. I know I'm really lucky to be where I am, UC-wise and wish everyone could have the same luck I have.

UC means that the butt rules, and when it's inflamed, it HATES mornings. You get up and subject it to the pull of gravity ... (My take on it after long experience!) / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
I no longer get woken up by my Uc but in the beginning I hardly got any sleep. I was always running to the bathroom. Now I HATE mornings because that is my worse time of the day. Even in remission I would still go to the bathroom 1-3 times within a couple hours of being awake. When I sleep, my colon sleeps. When I wake up so does the colon.

It's not necessarily all about gravity...reason I know this is cuz often I wake up, lay in bed watching TV and the urge hits without standing/sitting up or even rolling from my back (which is how I sleep) onto my side...I don't have to move at all and the urge will hit shortly after I wake up.
Mornings are typically the nature of the beast, a few IBDers will have most of their activity in the evening or later in the day, but the majority seem to be plagued with it first thing in the morn...what a way to start a day...everyday :(
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.
~~~~~~~~My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)~~~~~~~~
My mornings are so awkward. Sometimes I'll wake up and rush down the hall to the bathroom, other mornings it is just a few casual trips. When I sleep in really late my body just doesn't care about my UC and I wont even need to go, but I'll go sometime later that afternoon.
Ironically for class days it doesn't matter when I wake up, I'll have to go (asap) whenever my class starts. I'll get to class sit down, the prof will stand up and I'll bolt for the door.
I too always get up three hours before I have to go somewhere. Several poops - often so urgent that I can't get to the bathroom in time, then not as bad the rest of the day - though not reliable either. I usually take Immodium about an hour after I get up and again later if I am going out and want to up my odds of not having an accident. BUT sometimes, like last night, I went to bed feeling good while visions of nicely formed poop danced in my head. Then at 4AM I woke suddenly and had a huge bloody, runny poop on the way to the john. Such fun. Cleaning up me, my panties, the floor in the middle of the night. This is completely unpredictable and yucky!
